What Is The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Enjoys a Second Lease on Life About?
The story follows Rein Garland, a mage whose specialty is granting magical enhancements to weapons, armor, and other equipment. Rather than focusing on direct attacks, Rein helps his guildmates become stronger by improving their gear.
For a long time, his support magic makes the guild more effective. However, once he has enhanced all their equipment, the guild decides it no longer needs him and expels him.
Rein refuses to let the decision define his future. He discovers that he can reclaim the enhancement points he previously distributed, giving him the chance to strengthen himself and his own equipment. With his newfound freedom, he starts over as an adventurer.
His journey becomes a story about self-worth, independence, and the surprising potential of an ability that others underestimated. Along the way, he encounters powerful allies, dangerous monsters, and challenges that test both his magical skill and his judgment.
Rein Garland – Main Character Profile
Name: Rein Garland
Role: Main protagonist and enhancement mage
Special ability: Enhancement Granting Magic
Personality: Determined, adaptable, and increasingly confident
Rein is the heart of the series. At first glance, he appears to be a support specialist rather than a frontline fighter. His magic is designed to improve equipment and help other people perform better in battle.
His former guild makes the mistake of judging his value by the immediate usefulness of his support role. After being expelled, Rein learns that the ability he has relied on for years has far more potential than he originally realized.
Rein’s Powers and Abilities
1. Enhancement Granting Magic
Rein can apply enhancement points to weapons, armor, and other targets. These enhancements improve the effectiveness of equipment and can make an ordinary adventurer much more capable.
2. Enhancement Recovery

4. Adaptability in Combat
Rein’s greatest advantage is the flexibility of his ability. By applying his magic creatively, he can develop strategies that a conventional fighter might overlook.
Why Is Rein Considered a Cheat-Level Mage?
Rein’s ability becomes unusually powerful because it is not limited to helping other people. Once he starts using his enhancement points for his own benefit, he can turn his support skill into a major personal advantage.
His story demonstrates that a seemingly ordinary magical specialty can become extraordinary when its user understands its full potential.

Understanding Rein’s Enhancement Magic
The central concept of the series is Enhancement Granting Magic. Instead of relying solely on elemental attacks, healing, or conventional spellcasting, Rein’s ability focuses on improving the effectiveness of equipment and other targets.
This creates a distinctive set of possibilities.
How the Magic Works
Enhancing equipment: Rein can grant enhancement points to weapons and armor, making them more useful in battle.
Supporting allies: His magic can improve the equipment used by other adventurers, allowing them to fight more effectively.
Recovering enhancements: Rein can reclaim previously granted enhancement points, which changes the way he approaches his own growth.
Creative application: His strength depends not only on the number of enhancement points available but also on how he chooses to use them.
Why Is This Magic Different?
Many fantasy anime protagonists become stronger by acquiring a legendary sword, learning a rare spell, or unlocking a hidden bloodline. Rein’s story takes a different route: he starts with an ability that other people underestimate and learns to use it for himself.
The result is a progression fantasy in which understanding a skill matters as much as possessing raw power.
The Beast’s Fangs Guild – Why Rein Was Expelled
The guild known as Beast’s Fangs is responsible for Rein’s initial setback. Rein has spent years enhancing the equipment of his guildmates, but once the equipment has received all the enhancements he can provide, the guild treats him as expendable.
This decision becomes the catalyst for the entire story.
His expulsion highlights one of the series’ main themes: people can be undervalued when others focus only on what they currently provide. Rein’s former guild sees a support mage who has finished his task, while the audience gradually sees someone with the potential to build an entirely new future.
His departure also creates a satisfying change in direction. Instead of continuing to devote his magic to people who do not appreciate it, Rein begins making decisions for himself.
Rein’s New Life as an Adventurer
After leaving the guild, Rein chooses to become an adventurer. His journey is not simply about proving his former teammates wrong. It is also about discovering what he can accomplish when he is no longer limited by other people’s expectations.
His new path involves:
- Learning how to make the best use of recovered enhancement points
- Improving basic equipment instead of depending on expensive gear
- Working with adventurers who have different specialties
- Facing monsters and increasingly difficult challenges
- Building confidence in his own decisions
- Discovering the wider possibilities of his magic
These elements give the series a combination of adventure, character development, and magical progression.
The Phosphorescent Dragon and High-Level Battles
The anime’s promotional material highlights Rein and his companions facing a formidable Phosphorescent Dragon in a dungeon.
The battle showcases the importance of combining different strengths. Rein’s enhancement magic is not a substitute for every other skill; instead, it can make a coordinated group more effective when used strategically.
High-level enemies also give Rein opportunities to demonstrate how much his ability can contribute in a dangerous encounter.
